Water Quality in Oklahoma City, OK
Where Does Oklahoma City, OK Get Its Water?
There are seven surface reservoir sources where Oklahoma City gets its water. Canton Lake, Lake Hefner, Lake Overholser, Lake Sardis, Lake Draper, McGee Creek, and Lake Atoka. There are two water treatment plants in OKC serving over 1.4 million residents, one at Lake Hefner in North Oklahoma City and the other at Lake Stanley Draper in South OKC. Generally, the Hefner treatment plant serves North OKC residents, and the Draper treatment plant serves South Oklahoma City. Of course, there are also many residents who rely on private well water, but for the purposes of this article, we will only discuss where Oklahoma City’s tap water comes from. While it meets the EPA’s safety regulations, some contaminants may be unregulated, have outdated limits or may impact taste or smell.
Can you drink the tap water in Oklahoma City?
The municipal drinking water in Oklahoma City meets required safety guidelines, view the Oklahoma City Water Quality Report here, but many homeowners — especially those on private wells — still choose to install water treatment systems to address additional water quality concerns.
For city water, existing standards don’t account for all contaminants. Issues like microplastics, pharmaceuticals and PFAS (forever chemicals) are still being studied and aren’t fully regulated yet, meaning municipal systems may not address them. Additionally, even treated water can pick up impurities like lead or iron as it travels through old pipes, making filtration a valuable option for improving water quality at home.
Homes on private wells face additional considerations because well water is not treated or monitored by a municipal utility. The responsibility for testing and maintaining water quality falls entirely on the homeowner.
What Contaminants Are In Oklahoma City’s Water?
According to the EWG tap water database, Oklahoma City’s water also contains Radium, Chloroform, and Disinfection Byproducts. While these substances are within the EPA’s maximum contaminant limits (MCL), the numbers could be significantly reduced or removed with reverse osmosis (RO) filtration.
Haloacetic Acids (Haa5)
EPA Max contaminant level: 60 ppb
EWG Health Guideline: >0.1 ppb
National Average: 19.8 ppb
How hard is the water in Oklahoma City?
Water in the Oklahoma City metro can range in hardness depending on the area and its water source. Municipal water in north Oklahoma City is generally harder than municipal water from south Oklahoma City because the water is coming from different treatment plants. However there are municipalities within the metro that source water from wells such as Moore, Norman, Nichols Hills and Piedmont. We find that most well water is hard throughout the OKC metro. In homes across central Oklahoma, homeowners often will notice hard water signs such as scale buildup around showers and faucets, spots on dishes or dry hair and skin. A water softener can help address these issues in homes across the OKC metropolitan area.

The Proof
Why Do OKC
Homeowners LOVE Us?
We recently went on well water and even though it’s good water, it’s very hard. The Culligan salesman was easy to work with and the techs were very fast and efficient at installing / setting up the softener.
These guys saved the day for us. Our hard water was so bad it was destroying all of our faucets and appliances. They were fast, friendly, and extremely professional.
We have had Mollman’s residential water softener service for over two years, and it’s great. We have well water, and before having the softener our dishes came out of the dishwasher looking terrible, with deposits all over them. You could also tell there was long term build-up in many of the faucets, some which we had to replace. Since having the softener our dishes come out sparkling and we don’t see residue on any appliances or faucets. We haven’t had any issues with the service, and the company is prompt to answer any questions.
